SUBMISSIONS are in for the Brooklyn chapter of the
THE EXPLORER SERIES: INVISIBLE CITY SYMPHONIES #1 BKLYN
WHEN: Friday May 28th, 2009 7:30 PM
WHERE: UnionDocs – 322 Union Avenue Brooklyn, NY 11206 www.uniondocs.org
THE PROJECT: The Explorer Series: Invisible City Symphonies is an opportunity for filmmakers in cities all around the world – abstract, visually based, narrative, found footage, animation, etc. – to exhibit silent works which portray in some regard the experience of a city, or a series of cities – contemporarily, historically, visibly or invisibly.
These works have been given to musicians to compose original scores – classical, electronic, jazz, metal, originally recorded field sounds, animal noises, sounds clips, dialogue, etc.
The pieces will be shown with a live accompaniment in the tradition of the early silent cinematic experience.
The event will also utilize the outdoor and indoor spaces to exhibit site specific sculpture and installation work that evokes the experience of a city – embracing found objects, interactive sculpture, and the materiality and dimension of the local exhibition space.
The purpose is to connect international artists and the landscapes of different cities with a visceral sound and image experience – blurring boundaries of how we see space, urbanity, and the growing internationalization and globalization of visual and aural perception.
VIDEOKILLS, as an international collective with wide reaching artistic ambition, will curate the event first in New York, then in Berlin and London and Sydney later this summer (we’ll keep you posted for how to get involved/submit to each exhibition.) Each location will use variable sound and image pairings to create complex and varied experiences – playing with the concept of synthesis as each city will use a different pool of live accompaniments for a growing program of images. This will demonstrate how the perception of one image can generate a multitude of soundscapes, and each unique pairing will provide the international audience with an experience specific to their location.
We are still looking for sculpture and material installation art for the Brooklyn event.
